How To Stay Active On Your Next Vacation

If lounging on a beach is not your idea of fun or you’re just looking to switch up your idea of a “typical” vacation, you’re likely among the increasing number of Americans who prefer more active or adventurous vacations. There are as many ways to be active while escaping the daily grind as there are vacation destinations. In fact, you don’t even need to go far from home to get your blood pumping and have some fun. All you need to do is to find something you enjoy doing – and then get out and do it!

In many cases, you can find ways to be active just about anywhere you go, but if you want the adventure to be the highlight of your trip, give some thought first to the activity. For example, do you want to go ziplining through a forest? Scuba diving along a reef? Biking through the countryside? Climbing up a mountain?

While the sky is the limit (literally) when it comes to active vacation destinations, here are some to consider:

Visit a National Park. Whether you enjoying hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing or boating, you’re likely to find lots to do at one of our nation’s beautiful parks. Head out to the Grand Canyon for an adventurous white-water rafting trip. Enjoy Yellowstone’s natural beauty while hiking. Or visit Yosemite and explore the sites by foot or on horseback. Not only will the multitude of activities keep your heart pumping but the scenery may take your breath away.

Head to a new city. Think you have to be amidst mountains or beaches to get moving? Think again! Taking a trip to explore a new city can provide you with plenty of ways to stay active. The ease with which you can walk around most cities certainly keeps you moving. Then there are also plenty of other opportunities for active pursuits, from bike riding to dancing.

Enjoy a tropical destination. Just because you head to an island doesn’t mean you’re relegated to sipping margaritas on the beach (although you could!). Beach vacations allow you to do everything from swim and surf to parasail, snorkel and hike. Then when you’re done being active, you get the added bonus of getting to relax and unwind on the sand.

Join an adventure trip. If you prefer to get your adventure in along with like-minded people, consider signing up for one of the many adventure vacation trips offered by a variety of travel companies. All you have to do is decide what you want to do and then let them do the planning for you. You can do anything from mountain climbing to canyon jumping. You don’t have to be super adventurous to enjoy one of these vacations, however. The key is to find one that meets your thrill-seeking desire and your physical ability so you get the most out of your vacation.

Enter a competition. Many Americans plan their vacations around competitive events. So whether you’re looking to run a half marathon with your partner in your favorite city or you want to head to your college friend’s hometown to tackle a Tough Mudder together, there are plenty of ways to turn your event into a full-fledged vacation, complete with some relaxation and lots of fun in addition to loads of physical activity.
